Been working on updating my artist statement for months. Just never was really happy with it. Fully.
There were pieces I liked, but then some I wasn't crazy about. So I just kept working on it. I tweaked it and modified it and changed it, and it did get better and better.
I create art because I must.* It’s the core of who I am. I make art with emotion, integrity, intensity and hope.
My art involves experimenting with paint to create abstract emotive works. When painting, I challenge myself to complete a work in one sitting. I almost always do not have a concrete idea for a piece before putting brush and paint to canvas. It starts with an emotion, which leads to a color palette, and then to an idea. This method can sometimes result in what at first can be interpreted as a mistake in process. But this is always merely a change of direction, producing unexpected beauty. The work of art that is created through this process starts in the subconscious and ends in the senses of perception and emotion. This is abstract emotive art.
*Inspired by dialogue in the film The Red Shoes:
Boris: Why do you want to dance?
Victoria: Why do you want to live?
Boris: Well, I don't know exactly why, er, but I must.
Victoria: That's my answer too.
