How Can Gratitude Improve My Mental Health?

How can gratitude help your mental health?
Gratitude can be a powerful tool in your mental health toolbox to help with anxiety, depression, stress and more challenging thoughts. It can help to keep the big picture in mind when the small daily challenges can feel insurmountable or even just annoying.

I like to recommend for clients to “bookend their day.” What do I mean by this? When you wake up, before you grab your phone and start checking emails or looking at social media, take a couple of minutes to focus on one or more things you’re that you’re grateful for having in your life. Take some deep breaths in and out while expressing gratitude either out loud or in your head. “I’m thankful for my family,” “I appreciate my wife,” “I’m thankful for the home we’ve built,” “Thank you for loving me,” “I appreciate my career,” and anything else that you have in your life that brings you joy and happiness. Do the same thing right before going to sleep.

I think at times we all take some things for granted and we don’t focus our energy on the beautiful things that are right in front of us. Nothing is guaranteed in life, so being grateful for what you have can help keep you focused on what’s really important in life to you.
