Video Therapy

IS VIDEO THERAPY RIGHT FOR ME?

When I have my first conversation with potential clients, initially we discuss what’s going on in their lives and why they're seeking assistance. Once we feel that working together would be a good fit, I introduce them to the different forms of treatment I provide. The treatments all have the same goals, but are specialized depending on the persons and how they want to receive the treatment.

Traditionally, mental health treatment is the client going to the provider’s office and sitting across from each other talking. This is an effective method that provides opportunities for the therapist to observe many more things than through a phone conversation, such as eye contact, body posture, hand gestures and others. It also allows the clients similar information to determine whether the clinician is right for them.

But what if the clients have a busy work and/or home life schedule? What if the clients sometimes feels uncomfortable in a waiting room? What if the clients just wants more flexibility? There’s an answer for all those questions, and it’s available in my practice: video therapy.
Video therapy (also known as telehealth or telemedicine) is a method of treatment where the mental health clinician has a therapy session via video software with a client. The clinician can be in her office or even in her home (as long as wherever the therapist is located is within the state she is licensed in). Clients can be anywhere, and it is recommended they choose a quiet, private space for the session. For example, walking in a store or being in the living room with their children would be places that are inappropriate. You want somewhere you can talk about sensitive topics without having to be concerned about others hearing your conversation.

In addition to the convenience of receiving treatment where they want, I’m also able to provide extended hours, which also results in more flexibility for my clients. For example, if my typical office hours are 9:00am-5:00pm, I could have a session at 5:00pm or later or earlier than 9:00am from my home if requested by a client. Additionally, because clients can receive video therapy anywhere in the country, it expands the pool of therapists potential clients can choose from.

For some clients, they determine that video therapy is not a good fit. But for most of my clients, either receiving therapy services solely or sometimes via video provides them with the flexibility they need to consistently work on their goals without worrying about having to significantly adjust their schedule.
