Numbing Emotional Pain with Alcohol/Drugs: Healing Instead Through Therapy

All of us have experienced emotional pain one or more times in our lives. The death of a loved one, a romantic relationship deteriorating, memories of childhood abuse, and others. Our emotions can be extremely difficult to manage in these situations, and sadly, some turn to alcohol and/or drugs to ease negative thoughts. This can result in exacerbating the symptoms a person is trying to reduce.

Meeting with a therapist can help. Here’s how …
Initially, you’ll tell your story describing what’s happened and how you’re feeling now. This will involve stating the facts, but also venting and letting out these emotions. Releases of emotion are crucial in working towards a reduction in pain and an increase in functionality. In partnership with your therapist, you develop a treatment plan with concrete goals that are easily measured over time to track progress. It’s at times hard work in therapy, but it’s worth the effort because you can feel better.

I’m trained through my graduate education at Columbia University and my years of work providing therapy to individuals, couples, families and groups. Give me a call at (302) 273-0700 to set up a FREE phone consultation.
